Employment Growth Continues at Port Facilities

Employment at Port of Skagit properties is up 11.5 percent compared to one year ago, according to a report presented to the port's Board of Commissioners this month. Port tenants reported a total of 1,263 employees in the Third Quarter Employment Census completed earlier this month.

The semiannual job census, compiled by port staff, showed port tenants employed 1,210 people in full-time jobs during the quarter, up 99 from the same period in 2014. Part-time employment was up, from 87 jobs a year ago to 107 now, the census also revealed.

The employment numbers also were improved compared to the first quarter of 2014, with employers reporting seven more full-time jobs and 21 fewer part-time jobs.

The strongest employment growth took place in the port’s Bayview Business Park, with the port’s 38 tenants there adding 75 full-time jobs since last fall. Hexcel Corporation, which recently completed a significant expansion, brought 51 more full-time jobs to the port, and Gielow Pickles added 22 full-time jobs.

The total number of Port tenants and subtenants is 82. The number of tenants and sub-tenants at Port-owned properties is as follows:

·         Bayview Business Park, 38;

·         Skagit Regional Airport, 25;

·         La Conner Marina, 18;

·         Conwayindustrial site: 1.

The port will conduct its next employment census in spring 2016.

The Port of Skagit also asked the tenants to report their employees by zip code in order to get a picture of where their workers live, pay taxes, shop and use public services.  Here is the breakdown of the 692 workers who live in the Skagit Port District, by commissioner district:

·         District 1 (Mount Vernon and Conway) – 275 people

·         District 2 (Burlington, Bow, La Conner) – 207 people

·         District 3 (Sedro-Woolley and east) – 210 people

An additional 518 workers live in the Anacortes Port District or outside Skagit County.
