Employment Continues Strong at Port

Employment at Port of Skagit properties is holding steady compared to one year ago, according to a report presented to the port's Board of Commissioners this month. Port tenants reported a total of 1,133 employees, down just 0.2 percent, in the First Quarter Employment Census.

The semiannual job census, compiled by port staff, showed port tenants employed 1,096 people in full-time jobs during the quarter, up eight from the same period in 2014. Part-time employment dropped, from 95 jobs last spring to 74 now, the census also revealed.

“We feel very fortunate that while some of our tenants had to reduce their workforces this year, others added enough jobs to offset the losses,” said Bill Shuler, president of the Port Commission. “And with several tenants currently expanding their facilities in Bayview Business Park, we feel confident that we’ll see jobs on the increase again soon.”

Strong growth in maritime manufacturing led the La Conner Marina to a 9.4-percent increase in jobs over last year. Mavrik Marine LLC continued to grow, from 58 full-time employees last spring to 78 now, while a new tenant, Hard-Drive Marine, brought seven more full-time jobs to the port. Altogether, the port attracted three new tenants in the past year.

The total number of Port tenants is 81, up one from last spring. The number of tenants and sub-tenants at Port-owned properties is as follows:

•          Bayview Business Park, 38;

•          Skagit Regional Airport, 24;

•          La Conner Marina, 18;

•          Conway industrial site: 1.

The port surveys its tenants for the employment census in the spring and fall of each year.
