Employment Grows at Port Facilities

Burlington -- Full- and part-time employment by tenants at Port of Skagit properties improved from first quarter to the third quarter of 2010, according to a report presented to the port's Board of Commissioners today.

The Third Quarter Employment Census, prepared by port staff, showed port tenants employed 933 people full-time during the quarter, an increase of 116 from last spring. Part-time employment also grew, from 109 jobs last spring to 114 now, the census also revealed.

The numbers were down compared to the third quarter 2009, however, with employers reporting 21 fewer full-time jobs and 151 fewer part-time jobs. Closures at three major employers -- Nordic Tugs, Pacific Mariner and The Holloman Group -- contributed many of the losses. Helping to offset the layoffs, 30 port tenants added employees while just 17 reduced employment over the course of the year.

Patsy Martin, executive director of the Port of Skagit, noted there were 14 port tenants reporting at least 20 percent growth in full- and part-time jobs since last year. In addition, the port attracted six new tenants in the past year, bringing in a total of 21 full-time jobs and 5 part-time jobs.

"Adversity brings opportunities," Martin observed. "Our job is to find those opportunities to generate jobs, and that’s what we’re doing."

The total number of Port tenants is 86, up five from last spring. The number of tenants and sub-tenants at Port-owned properties is as follows:

  • BayviewBusiness Park, 42;
  • Skagit Regional Airport, 27;
  • La Conner Marina, 16;
  • Conwayindustrial site: 1.

The port's employment census is taken twice a year. Employment at Port of Skagit properties peaked in 2000 with 1,505 full-time jobs and 69 part-time jobs. Combined employment at the port dipped below 1,000 jobs in 2009 for the first time in the past decade.
