Employment Grows at Port Facilities

Burlington – Employment at Port of Skagit properties is up 14.6 percent compared to one year ago, according to a report presented to the port's Board of Commissioners. Port tenants reported a total of 1,066 employees in the First Quarter Employment Census completed in April.

The semiannual job census, compiled by port staff, showed port tenants employed 874 people in full-time jobs during the quarter, up 103 from the same period in 2012. Part-time employment grew as well, from 149 jobs last spring to 192 now, the census also revealed.

“This is the first time we have topped 1,000 jobs at the port since the start of the recession,” said Patsy Martin, executive director of the Port of Skagit. “It is a sign that the economy is improving, but it also shows how hard we have been working at the port to create more jobs in the community.”

The employment numbers also were improved compared to the third quarter of 2012, with employers reporting 46 more full-time jobs and 53 more part-time jobs.

Martin noted good performance in aviation/aerospace, with the port’s 17 tenants in that sector experiencing a 12.3 percent improvement over last fall. Hexcel Corp. led the way, adding 23 full-time-equivalent jobs during the period. In addition, the port attracted three new tenants in the past half year, bringing in a total of 17 new full-time jobs and one part-time job.

The total number of Port tenants is 84, unchanged from last spring. The number of tenants and sub-tenants at Port-owned properties is as follows:

  • Bayview Business Park, 40;

  • Skagit Regional Airport, 26;

  • La Conner Marina, 17;

  • Conway industrial site: 1.

 Combined employment at the port dropped below 1,000 jobs in 2009 for the first time in the previous decade, as the Great Recession took its toll on port tenants.
