La Conner, WA– Construction begins this week on the town’s next major road project.

C. Johnson Construction Inc. of Oak Harbor was awarded to do the work on the North 3rd Street arterial improvement project, according to La Conner Public Works.

The project on North 3rd Street between State Street and Dunlap Way will be complete Right-of-Way improvements. North 3rd Street is expected to remain open during the work with one lane most of the time during working hours 7:00 AM to 5:30 pm Monday – Thursday, Public Works Director Brian Lease said.

The work will include repaving the existing roadway, improving parking, replacing the water main, drainage improvements and replacing the existing pedestrian walkway and landscaping. Existing trees will be removed for safety and infrastructure reasons and replaced with a full landscaping plan and pedestrian lighting system.

Construction on the estimated $1.05 million project is expected to be completed by mid October.

The Town of La Conner has received grant money from the state Transportation Improvement Board and the Port of Skagit along with Town funds, said Lease.

Once complete, the project is expected to improve the connection between downtown La Conner and the La Conner Marina for pedestrians, commercial and industrial businesses, and emergency services.

Project updates will be available on the town’s website
