Port Commissioner Gives Tulip Ambassadors a Bird’s Eye View of Fields

Burlington – The two Key Bank Tulip Ambassadors took a helicopter ride above the Skagit Valley tulip fields April 19, courtesy of Port of Skagit District One Commissioner Kevin Ware.

Commissioner Ware, a licensed helicopter and airplane pilot, volunteered to fly Michael Mantell, 12, and Abbi Beuckman, 10, above the fields after hearing how previous ambassadors have enjoyed taking a valley flight. In the past, the ambassadors were able to get a “tulip flight” during the Tulip Festival air show at Skagit Regional Airport through the Young Eagles program. However, the air show had to be canceled this year to accommodate the schedule for a construction project that will rebuild the airport’s main runway.

“Michael and Abbi will really enjoy this excursion,” noted Tulip Festival Executive Director Cindy Verge, who joined them in the helicopter. “It is amazing how different everything looks from above. The helicopter allows for a great view.”
