Port Launches Clean Marina Initiative

La Conner – The Port of Skagit has launched a new Clean Marina Initiative at its La Conner Marina to build on previous successes at reducing the facility’s impacts on the environment.

The new initiative includes making improvements to marina facilities and instituting new Best Management Practices that marina users are required to follow. The marina also is distributing free “spill kits” to boaters that will help them understand and manage potentially hazardous actions such as pressure-washing boat hulls.

“The La Conner Marina already is certified as a Clean Marina and is rated at four stars by the Envirostars program, but we see opportunities to reduce pollution even further, and we need to take advantage of them,” said Sara Young, the port’s manager of projects, planning and environmental services.

Recent improvements include retrofitting the wash pad in the Dry Boat Storage and Haulout Facility, beefing up the marina’s spill response capabilities by making equipment more accessible and improving garbage and waste-handling facilities.
