Port of Skagit Tenants Add Full-Time Positions

Burlington -- Full-time employment by tenants at Port of Skagit properties in the first quarter of 2010 has improved slightly compared to the same period last year, according to a report presented to the Port's Board of Commissioners April 13.

The First Quarter Employment Census, prepared by Port staff, showed Port tenants employed 817 people full-time during the first quarter, an increase of 10 from the same period last year. Part-time employment dropped, from 148 jobs last year to 109 now, the census also revealed.

Patsy Martin, executive director of the Port of Skagit, noted there were 13 port tenants reporting at least 20 percent growth in full- and part-time jobs. In addition, the port attracted six new tenants in the past year, bringing in a total of 25 full-time jobs and 11 part-time jobs.

"We have been working very hard to attract tenants that will create sustainable family-wage jobs for the community -- and to support the tenants we already have," Martin said. "It's been tough during the recent downturn in the economy, but we are hopeful these figures show that things are improving."

The total number of Port tenants is 81, up three from this time last year. The number of tenants and sub-tenants at Port-owned properties is as follows:
• Bayview Business Park, 42;
• Skagit Regional Airport, 25;
• La Conner Marina, 15;
• Conway industrial site: 1.

Employment at Port of Skagit properties peaked in 2000 with 1,505 full-time jobs and 69 part-time jobs. Combined employment at the Port dipped below 1,000 jobs last year for the first time in the past decade.
